There's a wetland area near the beach, and it's possible to see a variety of ducks there.

Mew gulls, so named, said our guide, for their mewing call.

Glaucous-winged gull feeding on a flat fish (hanging from its mouth). I wish I could have gotten a better picture. We could see this very well through the scope. The detail on the fish was visible, could see how the gull sort of flipped and rotated

Birds of the Blustery Beach Walk

January 2, 2010: A bird identification class offered by Discovery Park, taught by Ranger Penny. She is a very good instructor for birding, and I recommend checking out any classes she might teach.

I wish I could have gotten a better picture. We could see this very well through the scope. The detail on the fish was visible, could see how the gull sort of flipped and rotated it around in its mouth.

The guide didn't know why the gull was doing that, but theorized it was "tenderizing it."
