July 12 & 13, 2014: Visits to Dr. Maze's Farm for a lavender distillation demo and Kurt Timmermeister's Vashon Island Kurtwood Farms for cheese tasting and cow spotting.
My computer is out of commission, so these are some preliminary shots and full essays to come later.
Roger Calhoon, former biophysicist, current farmer, and the Dr. Maze of Dr. Maze Farms, did a demo of distilling lavender oil. Both he and we, the audience, were troupers because it was HOT and distilling involves firing up a large burner.
On left is essential oil (you can see how small the yield is of this and why these oils can sometimes be pricey) and on the right is the hydrosol (water-based by-product).
